Today is a super fun post. If you watched my stories last week, you may remember that I took my friend Megan makeup shopping to freshen up her makeup bag. She recently had a big birthday (40), and wanted to update her look. We went shopping for a few new basics and then went to my house and I showed her a few tips and tricks. Megan was very kind and a good sport to let me take some before and after shots. But she is gorgeous with or without makeup, so I told her she has nothing to worry about.
A FEW TIPS & THOUGHTS:
Generally, It is always a good idea to update your makeup bag every few years, or at least, every big birthday. As we age, our skin and our needs change and the makeup that looked good on us in our 20’s no longer works for us. Let’s also not forget how vastly the industry is changing. There are always newer and better formulas popping up on the market.

My goal ultimately is always to have a woman look her best best and feel confident when they leave my chair. I want to teach them how to enhance their feature and focus on highlighting what they love about themselves, rather than “fixing” or ‘contouring” their faces to death. I want them to look like the best version of themselves, in a few quick steps, without wearing a lot of makeup. It truly doesn’t have to take a lot of time, but a few quick tricks can make the biggest difference.
A good, handheld makeup mirror is crucial in making your makeup application look cleaner and more precise.
Good brushes are key in a flawless and beautiful makeup application. I always say, buy the best you can afford. They will last a lifetime. This brush set is a great starter set. It is reasonably priced and contains everything you need to get started.
MOMMY MAKEOVER WITH MEGAN
Megan’s focus was finding a new foundation and concealer to love. She felt that she needed a bit more coverage now that her skin was showing some sun damage.
Here is a photo of Megan before:
We found a beautiful foundation and concealer that matched her skin perfectly. In the video, I showed her how to achieve a flawless application and also discussed the importance of using a good primer beforehand.
I shared a few tips on how to look bright eyed and wide awake, and how to correctly fill in your brows and curl your eyelashes
We finished with a light application of bronzer and a pop of blush and filled in her lips with a plumping gloss.
Here is the after:
Isn’t she gorgeous???
Here are the products we used on Megan:
BECCA LAVENDER PRIMER// A hydrating, color-neutralizing primer that creates the look of healthy, even skin tone with a natural finish. It minimizes the look of dullness and imperfections for a brighter, refreshed-looking complexion. This primer leaves skin feeling hydrated for all day makeup wear.
ANTI-AGING EYE PRIMER// I swear by this primer. It smoothes out your lids and makes everything on your lids go on more smoothly and last all day long. Also, if you have trouble with your mascara smudging, pat a little of this under your eye area before applying concealer.
BOBBI BROWN SKIN FOUNDATION IN 2.5// A water-based, oil-free foundation that delivers undetectable coverage and a fresh, hydrated glow for the most natural skin-like finish. It was gorgeous on her.
NARS SOFT MATTE CONCEALER //This high performance, full – coverage concealer instantly color corrects dark circles, redness, discoloration, and blemishes with a natural – looking, soft – matte finish.
HOURGLASS POWDER IN DIM LIGHT// Infused with luminescent particles, this powder captures, diffuses, and softens the look of the skin. The micron-size, color-correcting particles refract light and create transparent coverage, filtering out harsh light and refining the appearance of the skin. It is gorgeous!!!
CHARLOTTE TILBURY PALETTE// This easy-to-use, all-in-one palette has everything you need for a full face of gorgeously radiant makeup. As a beautiful neutral palette, you can use this to create a daytime makeup look or a dialed up look for date night.
FLAT YELLOW SHADOW BASE foxy// This shadow works well as a base color and highlighter for under the brow bone.
BLACK EYELINER SHADOW IN blackout// I love using black powder liner for making lashes look fuller and its staying power. I share a great application technique and tip for staying power in the video.
LASH CURLER// a good eyelash curler, along with a coat of mascara is crucial in making you look more awake. Megans lashes slant down naturally, making her eyes looked more closed. This really helped open up her eyes.
ANASTASIA BROW PENCIL// This pencil gives a very natural, flattering look. Full brows are key to looking more youthful.
ALL NIGHTER SETTING SPRAY// This weightless spray gives your makeup serious staying power and smoother looking skin and vibrant makeup that lasts all day (or night) without melting, cracking, fading, or settling into fine lines.
BUXOM GLOSS IN DOLLY// This gloss creates the appearance of fuller lips with a tantalizing tingle in a high-shine, shimmering finish. It truly flatters everyone and is so pretty.
NUDE LIP LINER// A rich, velvety lip liner to reshape, resize, and balance the look of lips in the perfect nude shade.
We tried to capture the lesson on video. Please pardon the bad lighting and horrible angle. Videos are something I am still working on, and it is a bit long, but I do think you will find it helpful and informative.
If you liked this post, please let me know and I will wrangle some of my other mommy friends to share more tips and tricks with you.
