In the past, I always struggled with dry, chapped lips, especially during the cold winter months. I am constantly licking my lips and I have also found that not drinking enough water is a huge contributing factor to this issue. Upping my water intake recently has make a big difference in my skin as well as my dry lips. Further, I find that regular exfoliation along with applying a good lip treatment at night works wonders in keeping my lips flake free.
I love a good lip scrub and recently ran out of mine, so I decided to try my hand at making my own and I love it. Not to mention, I can do without the hefty $28.00 price tag for a tiny pot of sugar mixed with some oils. The scrub is very easy to make and you probably have most of the ingredients already in your home. Honestly, it was kind of fun. I simply used my old lip scrub container after giving it a good cleaning, but I found these cute clear jars on Amazon for a steal of a deal. Why not make a few and give them as gifts? Your girlfriends will thank you.
DIY LIP SCRUB AND MY FAVORITE LIP TREATMENTS
Flaky and chapped lips can be quite uncomfortable and also ruin the look of your lipstick quicker than anything. Lips are very similar to the rest of our skin. In order for the lip treatments to do their thing, you need to get rid of the dead skin on top first, so the treatment can penetrate. I rounded up a few of my favorite, tried & true lip treatments that will keep your lips baby soft and ready for that bright lip.
DIY LIPSCRUB RECIPE
You will need:
A small jar
Sugar
Coconut oil (fractionated or regular)
Essential oils (I am partial to lemon, grapefruit or peppermint, but you can really use any that you like.)
How-to:
Fill the jar with sugar
Add 1 tsp of coconut oil. I either use fractionated oil or melt regular coconut oil it in the microwave)
1-2 drops of your favorite essential oil. I used lemon for this one.
Mix it all together and your are done.
So easy, right?! You can make 20 of these for the price of one at the department store and it is clean and non-toxic. Before bed, as part of your skincare routine, gently scrub a small amount all over your lips. You can even use your toothbrush to help, and follow up with one of my favorite lip treatments. Done!
MY FAVORITE LIP TREATMENTS:
LANEIGE LIP SLEEPING MASK// This stuff is amazing and a family favorite. It is intensely hydrating and will make your lips feel smooth as silk in the morning. I apply it fairly thickly and it has completely soaked in by morning.
PATCHOLOGY HYDRATING LIP GELS// These are fabulous and kind of fun at the same time. I use these to prep my lips before a night out. I will scrub my lips and throw on one of these while doing the rest of my makeup. It contains peptides to hydrate and green tea extract to soothe, and works in just 5 minutes.
R + F REDEFINE LIP SERUM// These tiny capsules are filled with a powerful serum that actually penetrates your lips to reduce wrinkles and smooth their texture. This is a true anti aging treatment for your lips and will make them look more youthful with consistent use. The price is a bit cringe worthy, but one capsule lasts me a few days, so it makes it a bit easier to justify the price. When my lips are really bad, I will apply this and then slather the above mentioned Laneige Lip Sleeping mask on top.
KIEHL’S BUTTERMASK FOR LIPS// Let’s be honest, everything this company makes is fabulous and this is no exception. Another super rich and hydrating lip treatment. This can be used as an overnight mask or as a rich lip balm throughout the day to help heal your lips.
SHOP THIS POST:
DR. DAN’S CORTIBALM// When it is time to reach for the big guns and nothing else is working, give this one a try. It is a recent discovery and works like a charm. It actually contains 1% cortisone to treat chapped and irritated lips from everything from cold weather, to cold sores, to sunburn. I would only recommend using this if you have a seriously chapped lips that need help in healing. I would stop using and move over to something that is not medicated for maintenance, once your lips are back to normal.
CERAVE HEALING OINTMENT // This wonder ointment has been a personal staple for years and I never go without it in my professional kit as well. It works on everything from chapped lips to cuts, insect bites, sore noses, cuticles… and much more. It is the perfect addition to your “mom” purse. Professionally, it is fabulous for prepping lips for makeup, taming ragged cuticles and men’s grooming. It is a a great, affordable product that is also extremely versatile.
BITE AGAVE LIP MASK// Crafted with Agave nectar and Jojoba oil, this lip mask is rich and nourishing. It is very thick and can be a bit challenging to get out of the tube. A little bit goes a long way, so this will last you quite a while. I love the pretty pink color as well.
ROSEBUD SALVE// Lastly, this is a great, every day lip balm. I use this on clients and it does a good job of hydrating and soothing dry lips. The price is right My biggest gripe with this stuff is the tin it comes in. It is so hard to get open. I have chucked the tin back into my bag many times in frustration, without being able to get it open. It also comes in a tube, which is the same amount of money for less product. However, it is worth it, in my opinion, to avoid the hassle and frustration of having to deal with that stupid tin.
KARI GRAN LIP WHIP// I love the light and fluffy texture of this product and it keeps your lips hydrated and nourished for a long time. I am also mildly addicted to the peppermint flavor and slight tingle it leaves on the lips. It is handmade in Seattle and a great clean option.
I am hoping this will help you keep your lips kissable and soft. Spring is only a few weeks away. I m so excited for some warmer weather and pops of color in my makeup and wardrobe.
