Cinco de Mayo is one of my favorite days of the year, because to me, it signals the unofficial beginning of summer. I am not really a liquor drinker and usually favor a good glass of wine. But, give me a good margarita and I am forever your girl! It is hands-down, my favorite cocktail and I love making them (and drinking them) during the warm summer months. I like to experiment with different flavors and I made the Best Blood Orange Margarita this past weekend, so I had to share it with you. I consider myself a margarita connoisseur and have a few tips to make the best ones:
Alway use fresh citrus
I prefer my margaritas light and fresh, and not too sweet and this is key. Fresh juice makes all the difference. Squeezing citrus for a crowd can be quite the pain in the butt, so I use this awesome lemon squeezer (works for both, lemons & limes) and this citrus juicer to help me for the larger fruits, like oranges and grapefruit.
Go light on the simple syrup
I hate those sickeningly sweet margs you get at restaurants, full of fake lime juice and sugar. When I make my classic margaritas (deets on those soon) I use hardly any agave at all, but rather, a splash of fresh orange juice to sweeten them. Only after adding the juice, do I add a tiny bit of agave to taste.
Use crushed ice
I always use crushed ice. It cools the cocktail more evenly and I just prefer it in general.
Add a bit of zest
I always add a bit of fresh zest to mine, no matter what kind of margarita I am making. It adds the prettiest touch, especially to a classic margarita, and gives your cocktails that little extra something special.
