If you have been following me for a while, you know that I have struggled with sensitive skin and rosacea for most of my adult life. It has always made me feel insecure about myself and I have spent years and thousands of dollars to find something that works. I have tried everything, from expensive skincare brands and light therapy, to prescription drugs, in an effort to deal with my condition. The truth is, nothing will cure rosacea or sensitive skin, but there are certainly things that can help soothe and balance it and help give you more good skin days than bad ones. That has been my goal – good skin days with balanced and calm skin.
I have learned over the years, that many things can lead to sensitive and irritated skin, ie. over exfoliation and overuse of products. This will break down your skin’s moisture barrier (think tooth enamel) and lead to rosacea. In my case, I believe it is partly genes, but also years of zealous exfoliation that have led to my sensitive skin. On bad days, my skin is raw & inflamed with red, itchy bumps on my cheeks and chin. I am getting laser treatments to combat this, but I am always looking for gentle & effective products to help soothe my skin and keep it calm. I have to be very careful when choosing products as most of them easily irritate my skin.
I was recently given the opportunity to try a couple of new Aveeno products, created exactly for my skin type – The Aveeno Ultra Calming® Hydrating Gel Cleanser and the Aveeno Ultra Calming® Daily Moisturizer with SPF 30, and I was so excited to give them a try. (I have always liked Aveeno products and have used them in the past to help with my son’s eczema when he was a baby and they worked really well.) When it comes to my skin, I will try anything that might offer effective relief, but I am always excited to find products that work, are affordable and widely available.
Both products contain calming feverfew and nourishing oat. The feverfew works to improve the appearance of facial redness and calm irritated skin while the oat serves as a skin protectant and attracts moisture to the skin.
The Ultra-Calming Hydrating Gel Cleanser was a game changer for me. What made this different was that it was a gel, yet it was still soothing and hydrating. Typically, cleansers for dry and sensitive skin have a creamy consistency and I have always felt that they were very soothing, but my skin never felt fully clean. I would still have to follow up with another product. This cleanser does both, it leaves my face feeling clean and fresh, but soft and hydrated afterwards – not tight and dry.
The Ultra Calming Daily Moisturizer is wonderful. It is lightweight, which is great for makeup application and I love that it has a gentle mineral sunscreen of SPF 30 built right in. (Chemical Sunscreens can also irritate my skin). Once applied, my skin feels soothed and balanced and I no longer have that “calming down” period of redness after applying my moisturizer. After using it for several days, my skin showed improvement and less redness with each use.
Overall, I loved both products and will incorporate them into my regular routine. Another big plus for me was that they are fragrance free. (Fragrance is one of the many things that can cause irritation in my skin.) They do a fantastic job at keeping my skin soothed & calm and are super affordable. Always a win in my book.
