THE BEST HOMEMADE CRUSTY BREAD RECIPE THE BEST HOMEMADE CRUSTY BREAD RECIPE
HAPPY WEEKEND! I am so excited to share the best homemade crusty bread recipe with you. It will change your life! It is super simple, but takes a little time, so plan ahead. You will be rewarded with delicious, crusty, homemade bread, that tastes better than anything you will get from a fancy bakery. I usually have 2 loaves going at once, one plain and one fancier version with my favorite mix-ins. ( I have included them below.) Feel free to create your own version and throw in whatever your heart desires. That is what I love about this recipe – it is so flexible. My kids request this in their lunchbox for their sandwiches and it makes a perfect addition to a soup and salad dinner. I also love to bring it as a hostess gift with a jar of fancy jam. It is a nice treat in the morning and is great toasted as well.
INGREDIENTS:
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 3/4 tsp salt
1/2 tsp active dry yeast
1 1/2 cups water at room temperature
HOW-TO:
Mix together flour, salt and yeast and any mix-ins you are using. (I like to fluff it with a whisk)
Add in water.
Mix together with a spatula or wooden spoon until a dough forms.
Cover with plastic wrap and let it rest for 12-18 hours. ( I usually prepare the dough at night and bake it in the morning)
Put your dutch oven on the middle rack and preheat oven to 450 degrees.
With well floured hands, put dough on a floured surface, shape into a ball and plop into the hot dutch oven. Cover with lid.
Bake in the oven covered for 45 minutes and then uncovered for 10-20 minutes until golden brown. (This step depends on your oven)
Enjoy!
FAVORITE MIX-INS:
- Trader Joe’s ‘Everything but the Bagel’ seasoning
- Gruyere Cheese
- Lemon zest and rosemary
- Cinnamon and raisins
Have a great weekend!

It is so easy and so good! Enjoy!
Hey Kristin! This looks fabulous and easy! Do you need to grease the Dutch oven? Going to get snow here in VA and it’s definitely a soup kind of weekend and this would be perfect!
no need to grease the dutch oven
