FALL CAPSULE WARDROBE
How often have you walked into your closet full of clothes, but couldn’t figure out what to wear? Do you still have clothes in your closet with tags on them? Did you purchase something that was a great deal, but doesn’t fit quite right? (My friend Jill calls that “having your sale goggles on”.) I have never met a sale I didn’t like and I am guilty of all of the above. In order to spend less, shop with purpose and wear what I already own, I decide to create my first Fall Capsule Wardrobe. I shopped my closet and added a few pieces, like these awesome camo pants and this sweater to keep it current. It is my goal to wear these pieces over and over again in many different ways, ranging from every day to date night and I hope you will follow along on my journey.
MAKE A PLAN
Before you start, it is a good idea to figure out what you like and don’t like. For example, in general my style is unfussy. I keep accessories to a minimum and comfort is the most important thing to me, or I will not wear it. I am very short-waisted and don’t like wearing skirts for that reason. They creep up under my boobs – not a good look. I am a jeans and t-shirt kinda girl. You will not see any skirts in my capsule but 3 pairs of jeans instead. My capsule is also pretty causal, since I work from home. If you need to head into an office every day, yours might look a little dressier. The idea is to give you a guide and some inspiration here. Work within your needs and your lifestyle. Please note, I curated this wardrobe capsule to fit my personal style and you should do the same. For example, I hate anything brown or earth toned and I generally dislike florals and patterns. My signature color is fuchsia. I also love the color grey. I am obsessed with animal print and stripes. All of these pieces are soft and comfy and work well together. I included a couple of real work horses into my capsule, including this dress and this romper. (Yes, ladies it IS possible to wear an adult onesie and get away with it.) In the next few weeks I will show you various outfits ranging from my mom uniform, to lunch with the girls, to date night, using the pieces from my capsule. I am super excited, so let’s get going.
Here are the pieces I selected for my Fall 2017 capsule wardrobe
TOPS
White Tee – everyone needs a good white tee. I have a couple that I love and rotate in my closet. I love this one, because it is the perfect white tee all around, and I love the look of this one, because it drapes nicely and gives the illusion of a tuck, without having to actually tuck in your shirt
Striped Tee – I love stripes and consider them a neutral. As it gets chillier, I may sub this out for a longsleeved striped tee or a striped sweater. I also may add in another tee in a neutral such as grey or navy.
Button down shirt – They still go along with the whole jeans and tee mentality, but can dress things up a bit. They are great for layering over tees and under sweaters. This is the perfect white shirt. It has a little stretch. This is my current favorite chambray shirt and I am loving this plaid shirt. It is nice and thin and doesn’t make me feel like a lumberjack. Plus, I love the pretty colors. They go well with everything in my capsule.
Camo Sweater – This fall, camo is all over the place and I added a couple of pieces to keep me on trend. This is the famous J.Crew Tippi Sweater. They make them in a ton of solid colors and I have a couple, but I am obsessed with this camo one for Fall.
Grey sweater – I love the color grey. It is soft and flattering and doesn’t show lint. I chose this sweater because of its softness and the longer, tunic style length, which will allow me to wear it over leggings as well.
Pink ruffle front tank– I bought his last year, but they brought it back this year at J.Crew Factory. I love the lace detail and the vibrant fuchsia color. Again, it works with my jeans and tee mentality, but is dressier and way more fun. A great date night piece.
White lace blouse – This is my other fun and fancy piece. I have had mine forever and still love it, but I found a couple of similar ones here and here. This is another great date night option.
Denim jacket – I have had this denim jacket for a few years and it is definitely a favorite. It is thin and flattering and goes with absolutely everything. A must have staple in my closet.
Moto jacket – This is a recent purchase and pushing me out of my comfort zone a little bit. I would not consider my style edgy at all. However, I needed a denim jacket alternative and I heard many other bloggers rave about this one, so I snapped it up at the Nordstrom sale.
PANTS
Black pleather leggings – This is another item that is a total workhorse. I wear them on airplanes with a cozy sweater, to run errands and even throw on a pair of heels for date night. These Spanx ones are pricy, but amazing and even keep your bits in all the right places thanks to a special sculpting panel.
Camo pants – I am a huge fan of old navy for trendy jeans. They fit, flatter and the price is right. I found them in a cute camo print and snapped them up to keep me on trend this season.
Skinny jeans in blue and white. Both of my jeans are from J.Crew. They are the toothpick skinny jeans and they are so comfortable and flattering.
Black Romper – This is another piece that surprised me. I never thought I would wear it, but it takes me from errands to date night effortlessly and is a great alternative to leggings and a tee on a long plane ride. It literally feels like pajamas. My tip is to size up. I am usually an extra small, but got a small in this for a little more drape and a looser fit
Blue Dress – This dress is a must have. It comes in tons of colors and is under $50. I wear it with all year round.
SHOES
Sneakers – these are the best sneakers ever. I actually returned them and then bought them back. Boy, am I glad I did. I wear them more than anything else in my closet.
Open toed Booties – I love these, I have them in black and tan and wear them with everything. Similar ones here and here.
Black Booties – great for cooler months with tights and jeans.
Leopard Flats – I have had them forever and wear them with everything. Here is a similar pair.
Pink Bow Mules – how fun are these? They are my favorite color and were a bargain to boot. They will add a fun pop to my outfits.
There you have it. A capsule wardrobe of 21 pieces = endless possibilities. I hope you will stick around for the next few weeks to see all of the outfits I can create.
